If you have kids, one of the most important things you can give them is the ability to write well. Writing is important all through grade school, high school, and on into college. Many jobs require great writing skills as well, and sadly many kids spend so much time on the internet these days that they don't know how to write well, which effects them in many different ways. There are many things you can do as a parent to get your kids writing, so here is a look at some great writing ideas that you can use with your kids to get them writing, to help them enjoy it, and to help them improve their writing skills.
Idea #1 - Do Some Vocabulary Exercises
You'd be surprised at the limited vocabulary that many kids have today. If you want your kids to start writing, you'll need to help them work on their vocabulary. Have them learn a new word or two every day and use it in other writing exercises that you give to them. You want to keep them learning and developing a more extensive vocabulary. Of course you will want to keep it age appropriate. This is a great time to work on their spelling too, having them learn how to spell the new words that they are learning.
Idea #2 - Work on Some Quick Thinking Writing
Sometimes it's fun to have your kids to dome quick thinking writing. Perhaps ask the kids a question and have them write down the answers as quickly as possible. This helps them to think quickly on their feet and gets them writing. Make it a contest if you want to. Some ideas for the quick thinking writing is to ask questions like the following:
- Name 7 animals that are mammals
- List your favorite things at the beach
- Use some adjectives to describe your brother
- Come up with different verbs to describe how people walk.
Idea #3 - Have Kids Keep a Journal
One way to get kids writing all the time is to get them started with a journal. Have a time of day when everyone spends some time writing. Have them write about their day or find some good journal prompts to give them something new to write about. You don't have to read it, but it keeps them writing.
Idea #4 - Creative Writing Ideas
Another great idea is to come up with some creative writing ideas and have your kids writing a short story, poem, or essay about something a couple times a week. Perhaps have them write a newspaper story on something that happens in the family, have them write a poem about their favorite summertime event, or a persuasive essay debating a family rule.
